Students explore the ecosystems of a relict lake

Students from the lower secondary schools “Naim Frashëri” from Vlashnja and “Emin Duraku” from Prizren, during a study visit, became familiar with the natural values of Lake Brezna in the Sharr Mountains area.

During the activity, they learned that the lake is a relict lake, remaining from earlier climatic and geological periods, which provides habitat for various plant and animal species, thus preserving biodiversity and the unique ecosystems of the mountainous area.

The lecture led by Arber Hajredini addressed the differences between surface waters and groundwater, the importance of lakes for biodiversity and the community, as well as the impacts that humans have on aquatic ecosystems.
Students were also informed about how to distinguish a lake from a river, which organisms live in lakes, and how pollution, construction, and overfishing can damage aquatic life.

During field observations, they examined the deeper and shallower areas of the lake, observing firsthand how conditions and biodiversity vary in each part.
After the visit, students worked in groups to analyze the knowledge gained and their direct observations. The activity enabled them to better understand the value of lakes and the importance of environmental protection.
