Ecological Restoration and Spatial Planning in Focus at Workshop with “Ukshin Hoti” University in Prizren

EC Ma Ndryshe, in cooperation with the University of Prizren “Ukshin Hoti”, organized the workshop “Ecological Restoration as a Spatial Process”, aiming to expand students’ knowledge of the importance of ecosystem restoration and the role of spatial planning in protecting and restoring nature.
During the workshop, key concepts of ecological restoration, the importance of biodiversity conservation, and ways in which spatial planning can contribute to the recovery of degraded ecosystems were discussed. Particular attention was given to the restoration of rivers, meadows, agricultural land, and other natural habitats, emphasizing the importance of well-planned interventions and sustainable spatial management.
To illustrate different opportunities and approaches to ecological restoration, examples from European countries were also presented, including the restoration of the Danube Delta, the recovery of the Iberian lynx population, and habitat restoration in Spain. These practices demonstrated that nature recovery interventions must be adapted to the specific characteristics and needs of each ecosystem.
The workshop also included practical group work, during which students analyzed different ecosystems, identified problems and factors contributing to their degradation, and proposed initial ideas for improving their condition. Through this engagement, they had the opportunity to connect theoretical knowledge with concrete environmental challenges and explore potential solutions for restoring natural areas.
The workshop highlighted that ecological restoration goes beyond planting trees or rehabilitating degraded areas. It involves restoring the natural functions of ecosystems, promoting sustainable land-use planning, and fostering cooperation among institutions, experts, and communities.
This activity is part of EC Ma Ndryshe’s ongoing commitment to biodiversity conservation, the promotion of ecological restoration, and the involvement of young people in developing sustainable solutions to environmental challenges.
